Louros River

Louros River springs from Mount Tomaros near the oracle of Dodoni (Prefecture of Ioannina) while tributaries from Variades Village (again from the Prefecture of Ioannina) unite with the river.  Louros flows alongside the national road Preveza - Ioannina, passing through the villages Voulista, Panagia and Klisoura. After Kerasona village the waters are contained by the artificial hydroelectric dam of ΔΕΗ Louros (that is, the Hellenic Public Power Corporation S.A.). The dam is  25m high and 70m wide.

A portion of the waters of Louros is channeled through a tunnel on the east (constructed in 1963) and travels through a hill to fall back in the central part of the river, just before the village of Agios Georgios. In the village of Agios Georgios there are the "sources of Louros" which provide water for Arta, Preveza and Lefkada. Also near the village of Agios Georgios, you will find the aqueduct which used to be the main water source of Nikopolis (300.000 people population). It was constructed after 31 BC by order of the Roman emperor Octavian August, and was the biggest aqueduct of the time. The waters of Louros would go through the aqueduct and through the mountain (thousands of slaves worked there in order to construct these tunnels) and it would finally reach South. Also, near the village of Archangelos you can see another, smaller in size, Roman aqueduct. After the dam of ΔΕΗ the waters of Louros continue flowing near the village of Pantanassa (Prefecture of Arta), Nea Kerasounta and next to the medieval Castle of Rogone.

Later on Louros also unites with the tributary of Valaoritis Hills. In the course of this tributary to unite with Louros, you will find what is called the "aesthetic alsylio" and the monastery of St Barnabas' (supported by the funds of the European Programme “Leader I”). Then the river passes through marshy and easily flooded areas called the Swamp of Louros. This area can be found between the villages of Petra and Stroggili (east), Stefani (west) and near the lagoon of Rodia. After this, the river goes through the valley communities of Nea Samsos and Nea Sinopi.

Finally, after the plain of Flabouro, the river flows into the Michalitsi at Salaora Bay (Amvrakikos Gulf). In the past (1912) Louros River (from its estuary to Filippiada) was navigable and there are many photos of boats carrying ammunition during the liberation war of Epirus by the Ottomans (Karabelas Nikos album, 1996 edition).
